Remember that you're going to be working with something that explodes. You could easily turn your house into a neighborhood nightmare. DO NOT EXPOSE NATURAL GAS TO AN OPEN FLAME, your house could blow up at worst, or you could be bald at best (sorry if you're already bald).

For a good solder joint, all connections must be clean. There can be no dirt, grease, or coating on the copper. The outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting should be sanded or wire-brushed and then apply a healthy coat of flux. The flux will help the solder bond to the copper.

If your previous water heater didn't supply all the hot water you needed, like if you're always having to take cold showers, you may want to upgrade and get a larger tank. Now, think about the fact that your old tank leaked and if that leak was bad enough, that could be the reason you're always running out of hot water. On the other hand, if you've added some more members of the family, more showers, more dishes, more laundry could all account for needing a bigger tank.

Position the water heater directly under the fittings. You do not want to stress the pipes, so make sure your measurements were fairly accurate if you had to cut any pipe. Make sure the half of the fittings that is screwed into the heater are snug and then slip the washer in between the other half (soldered to the pipe) and tighten the nut.
