What to do about doors and windows

Replacement Windows?

One thing that should be considered before siding is, do you intend to replace the windows and/or doors? If you have given though to it, now is the best time to do it. If you do the siding first, you will have to take some of it off to replace a window. If you replace the window first, it will actually help in several ways:
  • It will help you position the window correctly
  • It will help you properly flash the window
  • You´ll get better insulation (R value) with new, Good Quality Windows
  • You´ll keep yourself from extra work like making jam extenders

What is R Value?

siding windows doorsOne of the most important features to look for in a Window or Exterior Door, is it´s R value. This value relates to how much heat can flow through a material. The higher the value, the more the material will retain the heat. Different regions around the world, and around the country have different ´standard´ levels of insulation for ceilings and walls. For example, R-19 for walls and R-28 for ceilings are pretty typical here in the USA. Up in Canada though, a ceiling with a value of R-38 is not at all uncommon.

What value can you expect for Windows and Doors?

While it´s relatively easy to insulate a wall or ceiling during construction, windows and doors are another factor. They are the weak link in the chain. After all, it´s a hole in the wall. Older windows may be single pane, or even double pane. With double paned windows, a gas is sealed between the panes of glass. Over time, this gas either leaks out, or becomes ineffective. In new Replacement Windows, a value of 1 to 3 is expected, though there are special windows for extremely cold environments. Window Preperation

If you are siding over existing siding, you might have to put jamb extensions on the outside, if you´re keeping your old windows. You can usually avoid this if you can borrow or rent a sheet metal brake. For more detailed information on window replacement and replacement, check out our section on Window Replacement. If you are going to rip off your old siding and your windows are fairly new, there won´t be much work involved in preping the windows. Now on with the siding!
