The trick with felt is to get it as straight as possible and not have any creases in it.  Pull it tight enough to accomplish this, but again, be careful not to tear it.

Are You a Roofing Contractor Now? Well, no, not exactly.  You're doing real good though!  There are some assumtions being made here that I need to clarify.  First, that this is a standard Ranch Style Gable Roof, not the Red Roof Inn.  You'll be going from one end to the other, all the way up to the peak.  The other assumption is that you are not joining any other roof sections.  When this happens, there is a valley that needs special treatment.  The valley is the area on the roof where the two roofs meet.

It´s best if you look for any nails sticking up on your roof while you´re tearing off.  On your way down, constantly scan for nails sticking up and pop them out, trying to get them in the trash bin.  Make a game of it.  You don´t want any nails from the shingles left.  Nails that are not in rafters will tend to pop out and will come right through your shingles.

This article assumes you are tearing off a composite (asphalt) shingle roof.  The job is not very difficult to do yourself, but I´ve got a few guidelines.
  • Get about 3 or 4 friends to help you.  You don´t want the roof packed with people that aren´t working either, they´re dangerous.  Pick people you know will be safe and get the job done.
  • For the do-it-yourselfer, give it a second thought if the pitch of your roof is 8 in 12 or greater.
