How to Load the Roof With Shingles: Whole Roofing loads in 20 Minutes

in
Loading the roof properly takes just a little bit of forethought and can save everyone some work later on. You want the shingles spread out fairly evenly and stacked at the top (unless your roof is very big and steep, in which case you'll spread it out even more by placing it on cleats).

If you have a couple of good workers and an average size home, you should be able to tear off your old roof, lay felt, and re-shingle in 1 day. Here's the catch though, you'll have to work hard and coordinate the delivery of your shingles. You'll want them delivered right after you get the felt laid. This is because you want to have them delivered on a truck that has a method of delivering them to the roof. This is essential if you are dealing with a two or three story building, but is even desirable if it's just a single story.

The purpose of the drip edge is to cause any water running down the roof to fall away from the fascia. That water would make the fascia rot. A metal edge is usually used and it is pre-bent, usually galvanized steel or aluminum.

Unless you´re roofing a garage or shed, you´ll run out of felt paper eventually.  When this occurs, don´t nail the very edge of the felt.  Instead, get your next roll out and lay it over top of the existing end.  Give it about a 16" over lap.  Vertical seams like this need to be wider because water could get in at the top and get under the overlapping paper.  You want to give it plenty of protection so that it can reach the bottom edge and flow onto the next course.

Felting Roof: You Can Use More Felt With the Larger Overlap - Ends should Be Lined Up Good

On the next course, take the roll back to the other end and have your helper line it´s bottom edge up with one of the lines on the top of the installed course.  You want a minimum of 2 1/2" of overlap.  There´s usually two lines, one is the minimum, and the other can be used to provide more lap.  You´ll use more felt with the larger overlap, but it probably won´t be enough to fuss about.  Roll it out the same way as you did the first course, but line up on the same line.  Roll it over the edge, cut it off, and pull it tight.  Nail it in pla
