Re-Roofing Your Home: Learn How to Put Shingles Over Top of Existing Old Roof
in
The first question you have to ask yourself is this,
"Can I put shingles over top of those shingles?"
That´s what it really boils down to.
Let me say right up front that I am not a big fan of this. I have seen roofs with 4 layers of shingles on them!
Do you know how much weight that is?
And they think the roof is sagging cause it´s old!
Don´t get me wrong, putting one extra layer of shingles on your roof is probably OK, it´s just something I never got used to doing. Here´s the things to check though, if you really don´t want to tear the old ones off.
Another thing to note is that installing over an existing work is typically more dangerous because of the loose shingles you may have. It´s also more difficult to mark. All in all, it´s a bad deal, DON´T DO IT!!!! OK, so I got that off my chest, now let´s move on to tearing off your old roof.

- Irregularity (your new roof won´t be smooth if the old one is warped)
- Layers of existing shingles (though some codes will allow three, I wouldn´t go over two)
- Leaks in the attic or water stains in the house.
