fire place hearth

This ones for my bro whos not computer freindly. He bought a wood burning fire place(Tempco, louvered heat circulating) and wants to do some of the install himself. Hes going to put it on a flat wall as opossed to in a corner and his floor is concrete slab w/ a cheap laminant wood over it. His idea was to build a platform using brick for the hearth. I looked through his instructions and it gives demensions but he just wasnt sure of what kind of materials to use for the hearth. So could he just build a simple brick platform using the demensions given in his instrution booklet? I dont remember if it listed any specs for how high it needed to be off the floor. Does he just need one layer of bricks or whatever to seperate the fireplace from the floor?

Well, I hate to burst

Well, I hate to burst anybodies bubble, but putting those bricks on top of the laminate flooring is a no-no. I don't know if that was your plan, but if it is a floating floor, it has to have expansion and placing that load on it will likely cause buckling as the seasons change.

Can you find out if it is a floating floor? If it's laminate for sure, than it probably is. The correct method would involve drawing a pattern based on the plans, then cutting that pattern out and removing the wood inside the pattern. Then do your brick work (one layer should be fine, but you have to check with the building code office). Install some quarter round after the brick is done. You should probably glue it to the brick and don't attach it to the laminate.

Gotcha. Check codes, make

Gotcha. Check codes, make pattern, cut floor, lay bricks, glue molding, start fire  I think Ill have to make him come over and help with the wall after I help him with the fire place. Thank you for the info.

So I had so much fun helping

So I had so much fun helping my bro (and to fend off some gas bill) I bought a fireplace. So far Ive gotten some dura rock up behind the location and built a hearth using cement blocks. Im going to lay some lime stone slabs over them and set some stones around the outter edges. Its slow going along with all the other stuff but it should be done by Christmas.

Be sure to take pictures. I

Be sure to take pictures. I added an image hosting function to the forum so that we can all see how things turn out. I have a fire place in the living room, but I'm seriously considering getting a wood stove for the family room.

I took some with a digital

I took some with a digital camera that a freind gave me but when I tried to load them to our computer it wont work with our Windows program. So Ill pop some with the regular camera and have another freind scan them for me.

Well, things are

Well, things are progressing. The plattform is done and the fireplace is framed and secured. However the wife and I decided to use tile instead of limestone on the plattform. We will be buying the vent pipe and such this weekend but will have to wait for the 5 or 7 inches of ice and snow to melt off our roof to install it. I have taken some progress pictures and will send them after the roll gets developed. Ill try to send the pics from the wall adventure too as I think they are on that roll also.

Pictures would be

Pictures would be great!

We're getting dumped on right now, another 6 inches.

Wow how time goes by. 3

Wow how time goes by. 3 months later and still havent had a chance to get the vent run. We had a string of warm days but of course it rained all of those days. Felt like I was in Washington . Supposed to be cold for the next week or two so thats that for now I guess.
