Architect

I am geeting ready to do home improvements to my 1000sf ranch and i am looking for a architect to hire that can give me complete design drawings. I talked to one guy and he said $5000 for everything i need to go to the building department and get permits and everything I need to build the house myself ( i am a carpenter by trade). thanks for any help/ suggestions.

I'm having some seriously wacky things going on here lately. First a post pops up that weeks old and I never saw it, now this is here and I know I already posted a response. Oh well...
Architects are always a good factor to bring into the project. If he's giving you all you need to get permits, great. The price doesn't seem unreasonable. Find out two things:
1) How many copies of the prints will you get (permit office will want to keep some)
2) And, if the permit office doesn't like something, are his corrections covered in the price ;)
Architects do earn their money, but don't think that a degree means he'll catch everything. A lot of times things look great on paper, but in the real world it just don't work.
